What is a non-religious for the addiction?
I have an addiction. I was doing research on alcaholism, pornography and drugs. In every single program, especially the 12-step program has religious prejudices can turn non-religious faiths or otherwise away from seeking help. So I was wondering is there a program other than doing it yourself, psychology / psychiatry, cold turkey, or hypnosis? This is only a research on programs.
I am a heroin addict in recovery. I've been in the program for 14 months. I was introduced to the twelve steps a few times before it actually I decided to really throw it. The reason why not to enter a twelve step program any good is because the measures it contains the word of God in them. I grew up in a strict Christian home. Religion was literally beat me. So naturally, I have a lot of dislike for organized religon. Christianity in perticular. I once received a sponsor and began to enter the process of the steps, I realized that is not religious based. It is spiritual. I choose any concept of God. Not have to be Christ, Buddha, Allah or God-based religion. The steps that say "The God of my understanding." For the God of my understanding has no name. He is a spiritual energy that is very powerful. He is a God of love, compassion, and not "get that God" will not bring down lightning on me or hurt me. My God is a God of love and truth. AA and NA is a spiritual program. It is also a therapy group. A place where I can go and get some tips from those who have been where I am. It is a form of psychotherapy. The only difference is my room ful of therapists (memebers of AA) speaks of love and his own personal experience. If a therapist or psychiatrist who is talking some things he / she has read in some textbooks. How can I advise you in love if I've been in love? How can I teach how build a rocket if they have never built a rocket? I tried for years and many different ways to quit. I have made many times heroin cold turkey. Drugs are not the problem of addicts. Our minds are. The way we face life / stress, how our minds race and spin. The lack of control our thoughts and behaviors. We used drugs to medicate. to numb our minds from our fears, anxietys, anger, pain, depression. I was skeptical about the programs of 12 steps. Now I think it should be taught in schools. The 12-step program allows you to let go of the past, do not fear the future and teaches us how to live a life with an immeasurable amount of peace and tranquility in our minds. Without peace and quiet in our minds, we self-medicate. I have also had people I know try hypnosis. Did work for a minute. The only way a 12-step program that works is that you approach it with an open mind, who are honest and ready. O.penmindedness H.onest W.illingness. How I faces 30 felonies, to a divoricce, I lost my job due to the state for leaving a treatment center, lost the respect and trust of my family and friends. He became a liar to hide my problems. But more importantly, he lied to me and I had lost the love and respect myself. 14 months later, I have all my family and friends, I even advice. I have a great job. The best part is that I have peace and tranquility in my mind and now the love and respect myself. So, to answer your questions. From someone who was a skeptic and became convinced that there was a God, and hates religion. AA is not religious based and was the only thing that has worked for me and thousands of others thousnds.
